Adriano Staff reporter LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte—The Provincial Engineering Office is currently undertaking a major facelift of the Dap-ayan Center, a mini-food court and souvenir shop selling unique Ilocano food products and crafts. Engineer Charito Julian, project consultant at the engineering office said that the enclosed government compound located at the central business district of Laoag City will have a wider entrance and exits while the food stall owners currently renting here will be moved to the back. “This is to allow more tables and umbrellas for rent,” said Mr. Julian in an effort of the Ilocos Norte government to create more and wider space for commercial purposes. An alternative source that does not rely on fossil fuels was established in Infanta, Quezon to help supply the energy demand in rice and rice-based communities, Jan. 29. Located at Brgy. Binonoan, the bioethanol distillation facility produces energy without negative impact on environment as nipa sap is processed into biofuel for spark-ignition engines that farmers commonly use. Nipa is an indigenous product of Infanta. “This facility built basically produces hydrous bioethanol (95% alcohol) fuel to be used for small farm machines,” Engr. Alexis T. Belonio, lead inventor of the technology, said. According to Mr. Belonio, hydrous bioethanol, which can be produced from the farm like nipa sap, sugar molasses, and sweet sorghum, is a good alternative for fueling pumps, threshers, dryers and small rice mills. “We need to increase rice production. Adriano Staff reporter Pasuquin , Ilocos Norte—The municipal treasurer’s office of this town was robbed on April 6 as P100,000 cash from the office vault, which was forcibly opened, was missing. The municipal town hall of Pasuquin is located along the national highway going to Cagayan, about 18 kilometers from Laoag City. There was no security guard assigned in the area. As of press time, all employees of the Pasuquin government were asked to undergo finger print screening and lie detector test, the police said. According to Pasuquin municipal treasurer Ernelyn Cariaga, this is not the first time that the municipal town hall was robbed in her 35 years of service. She however did not elaborate. As this developed, Pasuquin Mayor Peter Felix Aguinaldo said they will intensify security operations in the area by setting up CCTV cameras and assign a security guard in the evening.
