Laoag City—The city government here honored and recognized four centenarians at the City Hall during two flag-raising ceremonies.

They are:

Lucia Corpuz Colobong of Barangay 52-A (San Mateo) who turned 101 on August 16, 2017; has 11 children, 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Mrs. Colobong said she lives a healthy life by eating vegetables and rarely of meat.

Narcisa Alonzo Corpuz of Barangay 43 (Cavit) was born on January 16, 1916. What is very interesting according to her is, she drinks soda and smokes tobacco which she believes makes her live longer. However, she emphasizes that despite of her vices, she eats lots of food for her to become stronger. Mrs. Corpuz said she enjoys her 101 years of existence with her 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Pedro Tangonan of Barangay 39 (Sta. Rosa) also believes that age is just a number. He is engaged in farming but found his “love” in public service as former a barangay official. In his 101 years of existence, Mr. Tangonan is presently the president of Senior Citizens Association in his barangay this is the reason why his 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren are very proud of him. Through his farming background, Tangonan believes this developed his long life with his deep appreciation of eating organic vegetables combined with beef and fish but on a very occasion.

Demetria Domingo of Barangay 5 was born on January 10, 1915. Mrs. Domingo and her late husband were both farmers and blessed with 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren. In her prime years, she preferred to walk rather than riding. She is also a rectal cancer survivor.  According to her, one of her long life secrets are eating malunggay [moringa] and banana.

Laoag mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas led the simple awarding program.

The Ilocos Times learned that the PHP100,000 check handed to them came from the national government through the DSWD.

This is aside from the P100,000 that the city government will also be giving each of them this coming October as the National Respect for Centenarians Day which the city of Laoag will also celebrate.

PIDS expert says income tax cuts justified; warns gov’t of revenue loss

Proposals to amend the personal income tax schedule appear to be well-justified. However, these proposals should include measures that will allow government to recover the revenue loss from lower income taxes. Dr. Rosario Manasan, senior research fellow of state think-tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), said at a seminar sponsored by the Philippine Senate, that government should look for new revenue measures to compensate for the projected revenue loss that will arise as a result of the implementation of any of the various proposals to restructure the personal income tax. Currently, there are several income tax reform proposals pending in both houses of Congress. All of them, according to Dr. Manasan, have the same objective of addressing the phenomenon of bracket creep, which results from “non-indexation to inflation of personal income tax brackets”.
