Vintar wins Agri-Pinoy Rice Achiever’s Award

Shallot farmers from Brgy. Salsalamagui in Vintar, Ilocos Norte find ways to look for local buyers for their bumper harvest this month as majority of farmers here have yet to undergo training on good agricultural practices to be able to export their products particularly in Southeast Asian countries. Pegged at a farm gate price of P8-10 per kilo, several vegetable farmers here asked the government to help them in marketing their produce. A certificate of good agricultural practices is being required by importing countries to ensure product quality standards. (Lei Adriano)

VINTAR, Ilocos Norte—The rice granary of Vintar is richer by P1 million as it retained its title again as the country’s top rice producer in 2014.

The awarding ceremony was held March 26 at the Dept. of Agriculture central office.

Similar to 2013 when Vintar town also emerged as the country’s top rice producer under the municipal category for surpassing their palay production target, attaining higher average yield and encouraging more farmers to use high quality seeds and appropriate technologies, including the local government allocation of rice-related projects to boost rice farmers’ productivity.

Blessed with abundant supply of water from the Bislak River that never runs dry even during the dry season, Vintar is the largest municipality of Ilocos Norte in terms of land area, covering 624.85 square kilometers. Majority of its irrigated and rain-fed farmlands are planted with rice.

Amidst the onslaught of previous typhoons, Ilocos Norte province has maintained its lead in terms of rice sufficiency. Along with Nueva Ecija, North Cotabato, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Pangasinan, Bukidnon, Bulacan, Kalinga, Mindoro Occidental, Laguna, and Lanao Del Norte, Ilocos Norte has been among the top 12 rice producing province in 2013.

Initiated by the Department of Agriculture, the Agri-Pinoy Rice Achiever’s Award was launched to identify the top rice producing communities in the country and inspire them to become more productive. The competition is divided into three categories - Local Government Units (LGUs), Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs), and Irrigators Associations (IAs) for the regional and national levels.
