Ilocos Norte’s Dap-ayan center undergoes repair

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte—The Provincial Engineering Office is currently undertaking a major facelift of the Dap-ayan Center, a mini-food court and souvenir shop selling unique Ilocano food products and crafts.

Engineer Charito Julian, project consultant at the engineering office said that the enclosed government compound located at the central business district of Laoag City will have a wider entrance and exits while the food stall owners currently renting here will be moved to the back.

“This is to allow more tables and umbrellas for rent,” said Mr. Julian in an effort of the Ilocos Norte government to create more and wider space for commercial purposes.

The Dap-ayan Center used to be a parking lot occupied by public utility vehicles bound to San Nicolas and Badoc. Later on, this was converted into tourism support facility during the time of then Ilocos Norte Governor and now Sen. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to showcase the various one town-one product of the 21 municipalities and two cities of Ilocos Norte. However, this was not sustained in the long run due to lack of manpower assigned by each local government unit and provision of security personnel to guard the area.

In view of this, the government-owned facility was offered for rent to food stall owners.

To maximize the potential of the Dap-ayan Center as local revenue source of the province, the Ilocos Norte government has revisited its current state by transforming the area as a venue for live shows to encourage more night life in the city.

Long before the entry of shopping malls and other huge commercial establishments here, nightly in the city is very scarce as Ilocanos prefer to stay at home with their families unless they have visitors looking for night out activities.

Pagudpud’s tourism transformer passes away

Ricardo Nolasco Jr., owner of Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte passed away on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018.
