KBP backs national gov’t greening program

Laoag City—The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) in Ilocos Norte participated in a nationwide tree planting activity on August 30 in support of the national government’s national greening program.

While taking time out from their regular programming activity, the KBP-led tree planting activity in cooperation with the parents and teachers association of the Ilocos Norte Regional School of Fisheries (INRSF), barangay officials and tanods, and the Pinakbet, a group of extreme sports adventurers, bikers and campers woke up early on August 30 and planted saplings of Neem(Azadirachta indica) and Talisay (Terminalia catappa) in a sandy barren forest land in the coastal village of La Paz, this city.

Now on its fourth year, the “Oplan Broadcastreeing” program of the KBP-Ilocos Norte Chapter aims to continue inspiring more Ilocanos to plant more trees and help nurture the environment especially now that the impact of global warming is being felt worldwide.

At a time when the INRSF was still on its infancy or more than three decades ago, Oscar Villanueva, INSRF school principal said the school used to be a desert-like compound without any shade of trees.

But with a continued greening and tree planting program, Mr. Villanueva said the school was developed and has turned out as one of the sites identified by the DENR as part of its urban forest project backed by public and private organizations such as the KBP.

However, during the previous tree planting activities, Mr. Villanueva said there was a high mortality rate of the seedlings planted due to water shortage and the lack of students to maintain the trees during school break.

To sustain the growth of trees in the area, the group immediately came out with a resolution shelling out cash from their pockets and were able to collect at least P4,500 for the construction of a deep well at the soonest possible time.

The simultaneous nationwide implementation of the “Oplan Broadcastreeing Project” is in accordance with a Memorandum of Agreement inked in April 2011 between the DILG and the KBP, and has since been done in coordination with the DENR.

Also, Executive Order 26 (National Greening Program) promulgated on Feb. 24, 2011, commits to plant 1.5 billion trees within the six years of the Aquino administration, from June 2010 to May 2016.
