LC police nabs 24 ‘drug personalities’ in 6 months

Laoag City—Proving that their campaign against illegal drugs is very serious, Laoag City police officer-in-charge P/Supt. Jeffrey T. Gorospe said they have succeeded in arresting 24 drug personalities in 23 different operation in the first half of 2014.

Mr. Gorospe said this emphasizes their conviction to eliminate the illegal drug trade in the city as well as other illicit activities.

The police OIC said the 23 operations consisted of search warrant operations, in flagrante or caught in the act, buy-bust operations, and “in possession” arrests.

Police records show that confiscated items from suspects are mainly heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu [methamphetamine hydrochloride], disposable lighters, pieces of aluminum foil with shabu residue, improvised tooters [sniffing device], torches, cash and marked money in buy-bust operations.

The Laoag police also seized cellular phones, motorcycle and other drug paraphernalia.

Arrested suspects, Mr. Gorospe clarified, are not all from Laoag, adding that the police operations were only conducted here.

Mr. Gorospe vowed that the Laoag police would continue to fight illegal drugs. He disclosed that they are now planning a drug symposia in all the schools in the city.

This came about, he explained, after the rumor of “free drug tasting” was floated. He stressed that this scheme directly targets students.

The police also joins Rang-ay Ti Barangay sessions of the Laoag government where they inform locals—as well as barangay officials and tanods—about where to report information about illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas lauded the local police for their successful drive against illegal drugs. Ms. Fariñas expressed hopes that the police, with the assistance of barangay officials, will continue their fight in eradicating illegal drugs in the city.

Ms. Fariñas also asked the police and other security forces to also go after other illegal activities in the city.
