Batac council passes centenarian ordinance

Batac City—In a bid to recognize centenarian residents of this city, the Sangguniang Panlungsod here has passed an ordinance institutionalizing the Batac Centenarian Citizens Award.

Batac councilor Florencio Laud, one of the main authors of the ordinance, said this is to recognize the contributions of all senior citizens in the history and development of Batac as they continue to play big parts in the programs and activities of human development.

In passing this ordinance, the city government would soon confer the awards to centenarian residents provided they natural born or permanent residents of Batac. The passed ordinance however would still need the approval of Batac mayor Jeffrey Jubal Nalupta as well as the final review of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Laud explained further that in the ordinance, centenarians would not only be honored with just plaques and certificates as monetary awards would also be given as they reach the historic age of 100 years old. Centenarians would be given a monetary award of P20,000, with another P10,000 for the succeeding years.

The councilor added that those nearing the century mark—98 and 99 year-old residents will also be given initial monetary awards of P5,000 and P10,000, respectively.

Individuals who have reached the required age who are natural born citizens of Batac but are residing outside the country are also still qualified for the award.

Non-natural born residents, meanwhile, must have been living in the city for at least 20 years to qualify.

Laud hopes this ordinance will be fully implemented by next year with the corresponding budgetary allocation.

Batac’s city social welfare office records show that about 30 individuals are qualified in the pre-centenarian award. Centenarians number at least 10 in the same list.

The centenarian award committee to be chaired by mayor Nalupta will process and validate the qualifications of the individuals for.

The candidates for this award shall be reported by the punong barangay where the person resides with a local civil registry record.

Mayor Nalupta, for his part, said he is in agreement with this measure. He related that he recently attended the 99^th birthday of an individual here.

Mr. Nalupta added that funding for this project will be included in the proposed 2015 budget.
